ARNIE SILVER was never the kindest of husbands or fathers, ruling his family with an iron fist and about as emotionally giving as a Missouri mule. When he keels over and ends up on life support his wife and five children have to grapple with the truth: If families were movies, theirs would be “Jaws.”

Daddy’s favorite, FRANCIE, gets advice from the “otherworld” while SAMUEL, an ultra-orthodox Jew, threatens to sue his mother PHYLLIS as a murderer if she pulls the plug on her husband. And even though Arnie’s living will is in place, Phyllis’s choice is whether to honor the living or the dead. This would all be perfect territory for the child psychologist of the family, ROBBIE, but he’s just collapsed with AIDS. Meanwhile, not to waste any time, VICTORIA, the baby of the siblings, checks the values of art objects around her parents’ house even as she goes into labor to deliver twins.

This leaves CHER, gay and intimacy-phobic, to navigate the emotional shark infested waters alone. She ends up discovering two things: leaving’s not always an option, and true family is not made by blood, but by choice – both realizations that enable her to finally commit to the partner she’s been pushing away for so long.
